Issue XI

From the Editor’s Desk

The final issue for this school year of the Voice of EBC and in part I am sad to see it finally here. It has been a lot of work but at the same time it has been a good year to be here, and having this job is a distinct privilege that I will remember for quite a while to come. I hope that the last couple weeks of your time here is beneficial, that you all do well on your final papers and you are able to enjoy the last couple weeks we have together before we all have to leave and go our separate ways.

Turn left, no turn right, are you sure we are on the right street? These we just some of the questions that we faced as we did the Student Council fund-raiser. It was about a 2-hour walk as we walked up and down Kitchener’s many twisting streets, passing on to familiar streets only to go down yet another side road, which would twist us in yet was seemed like another direction. It started as we gathered at about 1:30 PM and head out around 2:00 PM, the last group would trickle back sometime after 4. It definitely was a fun time as just being out, together with people kinda [sic] forces you to actually talk to them. I have to give credit to the first group back because they actually ran the entire length of the walk, while others like I did exactly what the name suggested. We Walked Around Wednesday Afternoon. It was a good afternoon, the rain held off and we raise money for the school, and the Oasis drop in centre.

Blaze A Trail 2009

Over the years, many have experienced the majesty of the Niagara Escarpment as it stretches across Southern Ontario from Niagara to Tobermory. Along the edge of the escarpment runs a trail that has grown from a dream to the 900 kilometre long pathway known as the Bruce Trail. This year, Emmanuel Bible College hopes to Blaze a Trail for student scholarships by collectively hiking the entire length of the Bruce Trail in one day. On August 29th 2009, you are invited to take a section of trail in support of EBC students.
In order to cover the entire trail in one day, we will be dividing it into approximately 50 sections with an average length of approximately 20 km (6-8 hours hiking). Some sections will be shorter, and others a bit longer to facilitate ease and access of parking and trail access. Additionally, certain shorter sections will be appropriated to people who may not be able to hike the longer distance.
• We need people to hike the trail with us. If you are willing to spend a few hours and walk approximately 20 kilometres in one day, sign up to help us complete this task.
• We need people to support the hikers. Each hiker must raise a minimum of $100 to participate. Cheques must be made out to Emmanuel Bible College. Donations of $10 or more are tax deductable. Emmanuel Bible College is a registered charity in the province of Ontario (10730 2846 RR0001).
• We need people to pray. Spend some time taking this adventure to the Lord and ask for safety and fun.
On the day of the hike, each participant will meet at a central location at 9:00 AM for their assigned section of the trail for a briefing. At this meeting, topics covered will include safety, Bruce Trail use, how to read blazes and more. Maps for each section will be handed out. All pledges (not collected online) are due at this time and will be collected by the EBC Trail Captain.

Register and start raising funds today. If you register today, you only need to raise $20 / month for the next 5 months to cover your registration fee. It seems like a lot, but it’s not. So sign up and Blaze A Trail for Student Scholarships!

Peak

As I stand upon this peak
and gaze down on my week
To look up the life I’ve done
battles that are lost and won.

On my own I cannot win
as I will continue to sin
A war cannot be fought alone
ourselves we cannot atone

His strength that has beaten sin
And with each other that we win
A single body, Christ unified
us redeemed so we don’t die

The Blood of Christ

The Blood of Christ” by Olivia Patricia

The Blood of Christ” by Olivia Patricia

As the cliché goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. If this is true, what words does this painting evoke? As we prepare for Good Friday and Easter celebrations this week, what thoughts come to mind when you see this? What emotions do you feel? Is there anything striking that sicks out? Anything you may have overlooked at first glance? Where are your hands in this painting? Are they even depicted on the page?
As I reflected on this painting (actually, I had the privilege of seeing the artist’s original; this one is her do-over), I was immediately struck by a vision of my hands holding the nails at the top of the page, confronted with the reality that I’m the one whose sin caused Jesus to sacrifice Himself. As I continued to look past the mere paint on a canvas, my eyes were opened in a new way to the reality of my tremendous need of forgiveness, my need to be covered in the blood of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, and I could also see my hands reaching up, longing to touch just one drop of the cleansing blood. Inspired by Kandace’s painting, I wrote this song, borrowing her title:

The Blood of Christ

This is the blood of Christ washing over me;
this is the blood of Christ setting me free!
This is the blood of Christ cleansing my black soul;
this is the blood of Christ making me forever whole.

You saved me,
You saved me, You rescued me!
Lord, You saved me, You saved me,
Hallelujah!

This is Your body, casting out all fear;
this is Your body drawing me forever nearer.
This is Your body broken for me;
heaven’s sacrifice to save us for all eternity.

Embracing the cross You took my shame,
bore and suffered searing pain.
You paid the price, all for my gain;
You give me life and call me by name.
You purged my sin on Calvary,
by Your amazing grace I’m free!
I’ll sing with the angels glad harmony.
Forevermore my praise will be:
Hallelujah, halle-hallelujah!
Hallelujah, halle-hallelujah!

Hallelujah! He has saved us! There can be no other right response than hallelujahs, highest praise for such a sacrifice. For those of us who have been Christians for several years and have heard the Gospel story over and over again, I fear that sometimes we sweep over it too quickly. My prayer and challenge for us is that we will focus our minds and hearts on the aspects of our faith that this Holy Week commemorates. I hope that through this painting and these lyrics you, too, will be inspired to reflect on the blood of Christ, His sacrifice, and what that means for you. May the Spirit give deeper revelation as we look on the familiar images of the cross, drawing us even closer to Himself.

Movies Worth Seeing

As the term comes to an end so the summer movies plan to be released. Here are the movies I think should be worth watching. In order of release date they come out. Just hope I have enough money and time to go see them.

1. X-Men Origins: Wolverine. (May 1) Movie takes place seventeen years before we meet Wolverine who fights random people in a bar in the year 2000.

2. Star Trek (May 8 ) This one is perfect for all those science fiction nerds/geeks who just can’t get enough of Spock and Kirk.

3. Night At The Museum 2: Battle Of The Smithsonian (May 22) Ben Stiller is back being the security guard. This time he is in Washington D.C. It looks good for people who both like history and some action on the side.

4. Pixar’s Up (May 29) Everyone needs a fun animation some times. This is by the same company that brought us WALL-E.

5. Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen (June 26) The sequel to an amazing movie. Make sure you have seen the first one before you go to see this one. Also the trailer looks great too.
