Issue X

From the Editor’s Desk:

This is the second last issue of the Voice for the year, which means we are also nearing the end of the school year and looking forward to the summer months. This definitely means crunch time is right around the corner, but as it does every year it will pass and we will be packing up and leaving before we know it. I want to challenge all students not to become so overwhelmed by school work and getting things done that you totally miss out on these last couple weeks, I know that for some it is a lot easier said than done, and perhaps others will have a harder time actually focussing on the work knowing that theirs so few days left before they have to leave.

I also want people to write, “Let Your Voice be Heard” about the highs and the lows of what happened this year at Emmanuel Bible College. I do hope that this year has been a year of growth for all of you.

Wildcats with Brooms March ‘09

A few weeks ago, I approached curling from a different perspective, not as one trying to throw rocks at houses, but as a photographer. The spots filled up quickly as we had 6 teams using 3 of the sheets of ice. We had EBC students, EBC Alumni, and as well as friends of EBC Alumni. This led to a time of listening, watching and taking pictures of the events happening before me, which overall was a lot of fun.

Some of the highlights on this Saturday night was probably listening to “Team – Team” and their cheer to “Do less worse” or it also could have been the amount of people who either posed or squirmed when they suddenly realized they were the subject to the next picture. To quote Stephanie Vincent “Looking good and curling… how do I do that?” One of the most impressive moments was seeing Jessie Goulet’s team which was losing 5 nothing going into the last end, score 4 points in a single end to finish the game with a more respectable loss of 4 to 5. The teams were also quite well matched up as almost every team each lost and one a game, other than Joas Swartzentruber, who won both of their games.  Overall, it was an entertaining night and I was quite happy not to have all the sore limbs the following day that some people had due to actually having to curl.

Healing on Campus

Lately, the focus in chapel and on campus has been one of healing. Issues such as confession, bearing burdens and prayer have been addressed and many people have expressed their deep emotional needs of getting closer to God. Personally, this has had a major impact on me because there are many things that God has brought to my attention that I have been able to receive healing for over these past two weeks. I have also been comforted and inspired by other students that have shared confessions both personally and in group settings. It made me think about how I am not the only one going through things at this point in time.

Messages in Chapel have also been pretty centred on the relationship between God and man. One in particular that stuck out was when the Barry’s came to share a message using their pottery skills. What struck me the most about the clay in the potter’s hands was the explanation that the clay needed to “trust” the potter to mould and shape it. So often it’s difficult to trust God to shape us into our full potential because we are reluctant to change for whatever reason. If we submit to God, he will change us and use us to accomplish his will. In many lives, God has allowed change to occur and he is still working to mould us into Christians that will give our burdens to him and actively seek ways to be used for God’s will. The presentation made me remember how fallible human kind can be, but it also made me remember how malleable we can be.
I believe that these things that have been happening are bringing Emmanuel Bible College together as a community. With that being said, this is only from my point of view. I live on residence and feel close to many people who live here. If there’s anything I would recommend for people living off residence, it would be to attend PJ’s and Praise nights. This is a night where students take time to get together, sing songs and pray- some in pyjamas and some in regular clothing. During these times, I have seen people share their thoughts on God and their own lives. There has been prayer for those who are struggling with things in their lives and a deeper cry for God and for his will to be done. I can’t even tell how much my life has been blessed by going to these meetings. It is encouraging spending time in unity with other Christians, praising God and seeing people being liberated from things in their past.

If I had to sum up my personal experience during these weeks in one word it would be “thankful”. I’m thankful for those who have shared about their lives, those who have prayed for others and me and God’s hand working to sustain us. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23 NIV) but “If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1John 1:9 NIV). It’s an easy thing to say, but the application is more difficult. I thank God for a loving Christian community where God’s saving grace is apparent so that as we learn and grow, we can empathize and pray with others for their growth.

Next Year’s Editor Christie Heemskerk

As the editor of Voice of EBC is my responsibility to find and train an Assistant Editor for the Voice who will help with publish and writing for the paper, and assist in other duties that my position holds, and hopefully apply for and be chosen to take over the Student Publication Student council position for the next year. Christie Heemskerk has been that assistant editor for me this entire year and it with great excitement that I announce to those who read the Voice online and the printed copies that she will be taking over this role for the following year. She has been a consistent writer for the Voice this year, as well as assisting me greatly in the Publishing. I am confident that she will do an excellent job in the year to come.

Voice on the Street: “Pirates or Ninjas?”

By: Matthew Vandervoet
When reflecting on life, there are certain questions which one must ask himself in order to be truly at peace. This question will be unique to the individual, yet will help to form a community of likeminded individuals. Some people refuse to choose,
as this would mean they are fully committed to one ideology. This question is, of course:
“Who do you choose: Pirates or Ninjas?

Confessions: Eve

Here’s my confession to you
Every word I hold as true

These things I’ve done have caused a rift
Have sent my course far adrift

I can’t even express how sorry I am
For the indirect betrayal of the lamb

So I say these things for healing power
I will not walk alone through this hour

I’ve been cheated and cheated others of their purity
Although I’ve recovered and apologized I’m the object of pity

I’ve sulked and skulked in the dark corners of my pride
I’ve walked away from simplicity to a complicated side

Separated from the only one who can save
Taking others with me to my grave

From dust we came to dust we go
The body may be gone but God holds spirit and soul

Because of this God promises someone who will redeem
By all the powers of heaven his victory will make us clean

The snake may nip at his heal
But he will crush his head with power, might and zeal

So sons of Adam, daughters of me
Hold fast in hope and earnest belief
That he will come to bring relief

For everything I say is true
He will do this in love for me and you

Song of Victory

A song of victory, a song of pain
the price we pay for daily gain.
Each day we struggle and we fight
The race around us is always tight.

A of promised struggle, a promise of strife
The challenges we face in this our life
Yet he is with us, and yet he has run
With us until, this race is done.

His yoke is easy, and his burden is light
As we can rest, be healed by his might

Energy Drink Review

Warning:img_4659

Do not read this article if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, breast feeding, caffeine sensitive people, people with heart problems; people who are hyper in general like Erika Woodford and people who have been drinking alcohol.

Many people know that I (Jason Bowes) drink a lot of energy drinks. If you have been to my room you can attest to this. So I Have decided to share my knowledge of different energy drinks with you the readers of EBC voice each week. What is the best taste, what gives you the biggest energy kick and what ones should be avoided like the plague?

Today I decided to review a drink called Rockstar Punched. Rockstar is one of the most common energy drinks available for public consumption and is available in a multitude of flavours. I figure Rock Stars are popular and always look to be having fun so maybe if I drink it I will become a rock star.

I cracked open the can and was welcomed by a strong intense fruit flavour smelling like, well fruit punch. It was a medium red colour, very similar to the colour of cherries. As I took my first sip I enjoyed the taste a lot. It surprised me a lot with the taste because I was expecting something very different. It tastes like McCain fruit or really any other fruit punch juice concentrate.  There was little to no carbonation, which is strange for an energy drink. This one is more like a juice than a pop.  There was no after taste and tasted great on the way down.

I felt a great buzz from the drink. With a good amount of caffeine in it I feel awake and alert for the day.  It tasted delicious and gave me a great energy boost. I would highly recommend Rockstar Punched to anyone out there even though you don’t become a rock star.

Rockstar Punched is available in a regular size or a plus size if you need even extra amounts of energy.  Caution: If you do purchase the plus size do not consume all in one sitting. It has a re-sealable lid for that reason.
