From the Editors Desk

Relationships: everything from being acquainted with just some person on the other side of the
classroom, to marriage that has lasted for sixty plus years, and is still going strong in the eyes
of both partners. We had an entire week of chapels to look at this, and by the end of this week
we have February 14, which has gone by many names but is probably best know as Valentines
Day. I am almost certain that everyone at least some point, will take a look at their own lives,
their own relationships, whether because of the Chapels, February 14, or this article, and wonder
where they stand on this entire relationship thing, single, wanting to date, dating, engaged,
married. Regardless, I just wish that whatever your position is, that you rejoice in it. If you’re
single, rejoice in your singleness, if you are not then rejoice in the relationship that you have built
with your partner. Don’t dwell on what you want or don’t have yet, but value the things you do
have.

A Brief Look at Relationships

So often, a girl dreams of her prince charming. Naturally, he will come in riding on a white stallion, rescue her from her distress, and then ride off into the sunset where the couple will live happily ever after… like a scene from a fairytale. Yet, for guys… it’s more like a scene from an action movie… the scantily dressed, attractive woman clinging onto them, and being the ultimate protector of the woman in need – looking very handsome, and buff, of course.

Okay… so we have to break it to you – these ideals are not real!  There is so much more to a relationship than that.  In our perspective, there are two main principles that need to lived out in relationships… not only relationships, but in love. Yes, the “L” word. Get over it, and read on…

The first aspect of love is commitment.  This is needed both in a friendship, and in a more serious relationship.  Commitment really shows the level of sincerity in the relationship. Without the knowledge that there is commitment, the relationship is unstable and will eventually cease to exist. Our second point of view on love is the willingness to sacrifice. This is the harderprinciple of the two to grasp. This is due to our fear of opening ourselves up and giving ourselves to another human, as there is anticipation that they will get hurt. There is a common saying that coincides this principle, “If you let love go free, and it comes back, it was meant to be”. This gives us the example that we must be willing to sacrifice ourselves in order to attain something of much greater worth.

Ultimately, the best example of love is God’s. Wherever you are in your relationship status, it is crucial to apply these principles, as they can be used in any scenario.  What it really, truly comes down to is that our relationship with God needs to be right. We can dream, but be careful not to let this world’s ideals take over reality. Protect your heart, yet let the One who defines love in, so that He may teach you more than you ever thought was possible.

Singles Awareness Day

At last it’s that time of year when we, the community of those not currently in a relationship, are singled out for our individuality. While this is a holiday for those in relationships, I would argue that the real holiday is for those individuals who have to do nothing on February 14th. While some people have to spend money and time on their significant other, we are free to celebrate this day by doing anything we want. I propose that we celebrate Singles Awareness Day by sleeping in, and enjoying the fact that a significant other will not complain when we wake up at noon, and have not texted / called them to wish them a happy “Valentines Day”. One day God may provide a person with which we want to celebrate with, but until then let’s not be ashamed to do what we want on this day. Besides it’s not as if it is a real holiday anyway, just a media driven weekend. The government acknowledged this by putting Family day in the same weekend, because after all we can’t have two holidays in the same week. (Except for Christmas Eve, Christmas, Boxing day, and New Years)

Purity in Relationships

Well, Valentine’s Day is here again and with it come all the joys and sorrows that come with this day. Some people love Valentine’s Day because of all the commercialism and others love this day because of the joys that come from being with those we are close to. But there are still others who really struggle with this special day because of the connotation that comes from being “single”. Whatever these “single” people choose to call this day it still brings up a lot of feelings: some good and some bad. But whether you are married, dating, engaged, single, or something else entirely there is one thing that can come from this day that is perhaps more important. This reminder is on purity. Now if you are married this may bring up memories from before you were married and the struggles or joys you had with this issue but there are those that are not married that need this reminder more.

Purity may mean different things to different people but the concept for it should be the same. According to Dictionary.com purity is defined as the condition or quality of being pure; freedom from anything that debases, contaminates, and pollutes. In relationships this generally means that one has gone further than what we are called to go before we are married. This can be in our actions, our thoughts, our even our words, but regardless of where we are on our journey purity can still be obtained. In society today remaining pure of mind, body, and heart until marriage is not treated respectfully in most senses of the word and feelings tend to take control of our lives. God calls us to be pure and in a relationship that tends to mean saving oneself for marriage and for the man or woman God has saved for us.

While this is the plan and some may be on this track because of the direction society itself has gone many are no longer pure as it were. Mistakes are made all the time in the Christian walk but that doesn’t mean all is lost. God is bigger than all things earthly and can forgive any and all mistakes if we only ask. Purity is achievable by all and is best obtained by talking with someone. This person can be anyone in your life, whether it is a friend, or family member, pastor, youth leader, or teacher. This person will hold you accountable for your actions, your thoughts or your words especially when you are in a relationship. Purity requires setting a line for yourself: A line you promise not to cross. This also means not putting yourself into situations that will tempt you in crossing that line. Prayer helps a lot too. Even if you are single purity is something you should consider now so that when you enter in a possible dating relationship you know what you can do and what you can’t do.

Let this Valentine’s Day be a memory for each and every one regardless of who you are or the situation you are in – make a commitment today. Even if you already have made a commitment there is nothing wrong with reaffirming it. Make Valentine’s Day a really special day not just for yourself for all your future relationships.

Love Today?

What do they call Love Today?
As black and white fade to Grey?
Will all morals fade away?
What do they call love today?

A brand new toy, the latest game.
The sexy shirt, to put others to shame.
A million bucks, a brand new car
But in all these things, they won’t go far.

What do they call love today?
As cloth and metal will rot away?
How can these things love anyway?
Is money what they call love today?

The perfect abs, the largest breasts.
Huge muscles, and tanned silky chest.
They strut their stuff, and parade around.
But in a few years, will their looks be found?

What do they call love today?
As time makes beauty fade away.
As all thing, fade and wither away.
Is physical beauty what they call love today?

A boy meets girl, and together they wink.
Then off together, both of them slink.
A night of passion, fun and bliss
Does all life, just peak at this?

What do they call love today?
From the right path do they stray.
But claim it is their right play.
Is sex what they call Love today?

I know they’re wrong, but will they see?
No one would listen to one such as me.
Love isn’t, beauty, money or fun.
But alas they do not know were it all begun.

This is what I call Love today.
Two hands unite, till their old and grey.
Love starts to grow when one gives it away.
Willing to give more than one gets each day.
This is what I call love today.
Love for which I wait this day.

How Do We Show Love Today?

How do we our show Love today?
Boasting, or loud words do we say?
Or With, things or money do we pay?
How do we say, we love today?

To a dear friend, or a close brother
one to whom, their could be no other.
It is awkward, to say “I Thank you.”
So unspoken are the words too true.

How do we our show Love today?
A kind act as we all go our way?
Gone and Lost in a chaotic day?
How do we say, we love today?

The poor, and beggar on the street
our couple coins, to their hands meet
Yet shortly after the dollar paper flies
as costly hobbies, our wallet fries

How do we show Love today?
The poor are always here to stay
Coins won’t pay them to go away.
How do we say, we love today?

Eyes meet together both guy and girl
Tongue is frozen, nervous he could hurl.
The hearts hurts as she passes on
Another day, of indecision gone.

How do we show Love today?
Emotions and feelings, tear and play
As we feel like we are wasting away
How do we say, we love today?

To this question, all answers I do not know
As through my life I continue to go.
Yet God’s True love, I try and model true
My actions, may one day affect you.

How do we show Love today?
I hope that I do get the chance to say.
Ask a friend, or brother to stay
To tell how much to me they mean today.
And show them that I care anyway
This is I want to say I love today.

Using Our Gifts

Are you ever amazed at how God uses various parts of your background and interests and brings those experiences into new situations in which he wants to use you and/or challenge you?

After working in administration ministry at my church for seven years until February of 2008, I wondered what God would have for me next as an outlet for my gifts and interests. Because of my background in linguistics and my training in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language), I looked into volunteering at an ESL class at the local community centre but the program funding was cancelled and the class was discontinued.

Then an ESL opportunity came to me: I was asked to teach a class at Hazelglen Alliance Church here in Kitchener. The church is in a prime neighbourhood for new Canadians, many of whom can walk to the class. The leadership has a vision for ministry and is supportive of the group of volunteers who are involved. I came to see this opportunity as God-given.

Each Monday night, about a dozen students and a half dozen volunteers meet for two hours of English lessons and conversation. Friendship was our theme for the Fall and it seemed to strike a chord within both the students and the volunteers. We looked at some friendship proverbs and some Bible verses about friendship, discussed cultural aspects of language choices, and heard the students talk about friendship, and express gratefulness for the friendship of the volunteers in the ESL class.

One of those volunteers is Helen Oviedo, our favorite front-desk presence here at EBC. She felt drawn to volunteer at the ESL class at Hazelglen, her home church, for a Field Education credit as she works on her academic program. She didn’t quite know what to expect but met with the coordinator to discuss it and then was willing to give it a try.

She has found the experience to be much more than just a way to fulfill a Field Ed requirement. “I’ve been really stretched as I’ve listened to the students describing some of their beliefs and religious practices as we’ve discussed Canadian culture and holidays. It’s an opportunity to connect with non-Christians and I feel like I’m beginning to understand God’s heart for all the world. I think it’s cool how the lessons from my world mission class in the Fall semester tied together with this Field Ed placement.”

I see Helen using the gifts and abilities God has given her as she connects with the ESL students both during the class and outside of class hours, and I too have experienced great satisfaction in using my ability to contribute to the ministry of the Hazelglen volunteers who pour much time, service, and love into the class members. I don’t have great social skills – conversation has never been a forte, and generally I’d rather read a book than go out for coffee with someone. Fortunately, God provides people who love interaction (like Helen) to do that, and uses me to do what he’s gifted me for – stand in front of a classroom and talk about language! It’s extremely satisfying to see God use our gifts and personalities and coordinate them with others’ to present a well-rounded program. It’s what the body of Christ is about.

Whether you’re doing something for FE credit, or for pay, or purely for enjoyment, the sense of being part of what God is doing is amazing and rewarding. How wonderful that God uses us to accomplish his purposes!

Why I don’t Hug

Okay the name of this article is wrong, I do hug, just not very often and I have my own reasons for it, two of them to be exact. The first but probably lesser important is personal space issues.  I am not that comfortable letting people into my personal space. I’m sure it could be psycho-analyzed and traced back to maybe when I was younger and was bullied or something but mainly because of my second reason, I’m am fully comfortable with the boundaries I have set.

The second reason is personally I believe we cheapen it. We cheapen physical contact between each other. Consider two extremes, if one person went around kissing every single person on the lips, when it finally got to your turn, it would mean absolutely nothing. It was just something that person did, and regardless of your opinion of kissing on the lips, the fact would remain that, it was just something that person did, and had about as much meaning as being breathing. Now the reverse is true, if you were hanging around someone who had a history of being very physically conservative, and suddenly he or she gave you a quick peck on the check that small and swift action would and could have more meaning packed into it than an exploding star has energy. And this point is from where I come from, I don’t want hugging to be just something I do. I want to be intentional with all my actions.  I want my actions to mean something when I do them. I know they do things differently in other cultures, but simply put I don’t live in other cultures, I live in this one.

Energy Drink Review

Warning

Do not read this article if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, breast feeding, caffeine sensitive people, people with heart problems; people who are hyper in general like Erica Woodford and people who have been drinking alcohol.

Many people know that I (Jason Bowes) drink a lot of energy drinks. If you have been to my room you can attest to this. So I have decided to share my knowledge of different energy drinks with you the readers of EBC voice each week. What is the best taste? What gives you the biggest energy kick? And which ones should you avoid like the plague.

One of the most popular energy drinks available to the public is the ever famous Red Bull. It was one of the first energy drinks to hit Canada from the fun loving people in Austria. If one were to buy one you would be spending on average $ 2.99 a can. What does this $2.99 buy you? A can with a two-tone blue and silver back ground with two well red bulls locking horns in the centre.
What really matters is what is in the can.

The liquid itself is clear and bright neon yellow in colour. The smell is of sweetness and the best term to use is gumminess. One of the major components is the taste; it is sweet tasting almost like a handful of skittles. It is lightly carbonated like a regular pop and refreshing to drink. As one was to continue drinking the beverage it does not vary from this. Sometimes the taste of a beverage may change after drinking it for a while. This is not the case with Red Bull.

My energy level did increase when I first drank it but I really wanted to see how I would be 15 minutes later when my body was digesting it. After 15 minutes I felt alert, awake and ready to go. I did not feel jittery but I did feel very light and I felt like I could run faster.

I did not feel a “crash” as people describe it. This could also be me as a person. Whether or not you will “crash” after you energy drink will depend on you as a person.

Overall if one needs to stay awake after a long night of writing papers or needs a boost in a less than exciting class, Red Bull will help you out. Besides not being red or giving you wings I would recommend it.
