Issue VII

From the Editor’s Desk

Winter Break is now a good distance away and we are three weeks into the second semester. We get to reflect on both the old and the new. In fact, we are still doing the same old routine; attending classes, writing papers, doing assignments and projects as well as chapel and floor group on the same day and times that they always were. Yet at the same time, there is the new. We have new classes to attend, and perhaps new teachers to listen to and learn from. New faces are also seen as new students have arrived and started this semester with us. Waking up and looking at the same scene again is just like the difference the first major snow fall makes, only now covered by a white crisp blanket of snow.

I would like to first welcome those who are new, and thank-you for becoming part of our community, and secondly I would like to challenge everyone to enjoy the things that are new around us, enjoy the change that can stir things up and make life interesting. This may be the second semester, but it is still the beginning of that semester, so I wish and hope the best for you all.

God Bless

Aloha! 09

With grass skirts, leis, delicious mocktails and even tropical-coloured fish there could only be one explanation for this sort of thing… Aloha this year was a fantastic event that brought both old and new students together. One of our new first year students Jon Jonathan says, “Youz guyz are great!” Some favourites of decorations and costumes include the fatted pig on the table, fish as center pieces and Dan Riddolls as a mistress of the hula arts. As pretty as Dan was though, Jaime Clelland agreed that the only thing that would make Aloha better would be “James Giles wearing a Speedo!” Some of the winners from this year’s events include: Jon Jonathan and David Kennaway for the hot pepper challenge, Jamie as the king of Limbo, Dan Wallace as the most skilled dancer, Tina Moore as the cutest dancer, Graham Sweet as the funniest dancer, Dan Riddolls as the most seductive dancer, Mike Beams as the dancer with the most effort and Brandon Meyers and Leanne Knechtel tied for best dancer. Other events such as a Piñata, which showered half of the room with candy once it was broken open by Jeff Hopkins, as well as David Kennaway and Brandon Meyers coming in at a very close first and second place for Chubby Bunny contest with pineapple. With much enthusiasm and skill, our Master of Ceremonies Leanne (head of Special Events committee) and Matt Winger (head of Social Concerns committee) did an excellent job of keeping a fun, light-hearted atmosphere. A special thanks goes to all the people who helped set up and put away decorations, those who helped plan this event and everyone who came out and enjoyed Aloha! God bless EBC- PEACE

Winter-een-mas!

I would like to take a few moments to share with you an unofficial holiday I have celebrated for the past several years. I would like to introduce EBC to Winter-een-mas! Now this Holiday will not be significant to everyone. It is a celebration of video games and the people who play them. Although there is no official structure for the holiday, the point is to be aware of the temporary escape games can give us from the stress of school and life, as well as the community that this form of entertainment generates. This holiday is celebrated from January 25th through to the 31st. I implore gamers and like minded individuals to seek company during this week and most importantly remember that games too are a gift from God which allow us to escape from reality and, I believe enjoy life in imaginative and unique ways.

Cocoon

I see the darkness
I hear the silence
I feel the cold
Hidden
From your light
Your voice
Your warmth
I need to get out
I need to break free
I want out of this shell
And into your presence
As I struggle and tear
I am confused by the pain
If this is for the best,
Why does it hurt?
I become more desperate
How long have I been
Away from the Son?
I need you
I need you
I need you
I need you…
Al last
You begin to shine through
My old self dies
You give me wings
I fly into your glory
You alone set me free

Bursting the Bubble – A Brief Overview of Global Politics

The Most Major breaking news that has happened in the Past couple weeks would be the swearing in of Barack Obama as the President of the United States on Tuesday January 20th. As well as the Canadian Parliament will present the budget which will be the test to see whether or not the opposition parties will let the budget pass, or if we will be possibly forced back for another election.

A THANKYOU

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to tell each of THANK YOU for the help, meals and gifts during the busy moving time. I was SO very surprised at how everyone showed up to help and it all went so smoothly!

We are pretty much settled in and making this home again; and of course the kids are happy to be back in Elmira with their friends.

Thank you as well to the spouses who sat at home while “allowing” their spouse to come help. I do not forget how much you gave as well.

Please know that I appreciate everything and thank Father for you often.

Blessings

Jacqueline
