Issue III

From the Editors Desk:

One more Week to go and it will be reading break, which means this semester is half over. I’m not sure where all the time went.  I know for myself I’ve enjoyed being here, and kind of wish things were not moving as quickly. I hope people were able to enjoy themselves during the weekend, eating turkey, and spending time with family and friends. To think that only four more days and we will be off again, this time for an entire week. I will give both a reminder and a warning though, after reading week, school will be getting busy. More and more papers and assignments will be due, as work loads will pile up. Use the time you have wisely and you will be able to lessen your load for later.
God Bless

Wildcat café

It’s the first week of having the Wildcat Café open and critics such as Matthew Gates rave that the atmosphere is “inviting yet subtle, subtle yet inspiring, inspiring but different, different but familiar”. No-one quite knows what he meant by that, but I’m thinking it’s a two thumbs up. With ambient music that provides a mellow atmosphere for students, Jacqueline Williams is reminded of our local Starbucks. With good friends and the thrill of being able to attend classes on time after having a good cup of coffee, the Wildcat Café is a great place to socialize, turn up the Jazz music and soak up every moment of college life.

The Hike 2: The Sequel

On Saturday October 4, Tim Grace, Graham Sweet, Matthew Gates, Melissa Goodridge and I left to go on the second EBC Hike. The hike was at Rockwood Conservation Area in the blooming metropolis of Rockwood.  The hike was another nice break from being on campus for the past couple weeks.  There were ruins of an old mill that have been well maintained and used for events; it would be used for a wedding later on in the day. There was a lot to see, including caves, waterfalls, foliage, wonderful views from a high ledges, and green stuff on water. The caves were not huge by any means, definitely were interesting enough to see, and deep enough to do some exploring in. The best part of the entire hike was the location where we stopped to eat lunch. We were quite high up and you could see for quite a distance around us, looking out over the Eramosa River and the woods below. Another amazing feature were the potholes: rock formations that were left over by the glaciers. These were almost perfectly rounded holes gouged into the stone, which looked almost too perfect to fully believe that they were not man made. It was funny finding a picnic table at the bottom of one of the more shallow holes.

For me the hike was also a nice place to get to know and chat with some of the people I do not normally hang around. Watching Graham enjoy himself out doors as well as just the company of the other people I was with made this entire hiking a nice and relaxing place to be for that Saturday. I look forward to any future hikes.

What Fictional Character Are you?

Matthew Vandervoot

Fictional characters are found at the core of our modern society. Everyone’s lives are impacted in some way by characters created to amuse us, and teach us about life. This issue of “the Voice”we asked you to tell us who you would be if you could be a fictional character, and why…

**Open in a word of prayer**

Well, last time, we talked about Joshua, and how God had appointed him to be the leader.  But did you wonder what he did before that?  Joshua was Moses’ aide.

What is interesting about Joshua is that while Moses was alive and leading the people of Israel, there is not much mention of Joshua.  However, he does appear in a few spots in scripture that helps us get a glimpse into his heart.

Remember when Moses led the people out of Egypt and stopped at Mount Sinai?  It is the place where he received the Ten Commandments, and other instructions.  Now, at this time in the Old Testament, God appeared to Moses and the people as a “cloud.”  Moses went into this cloud to meet with God.  Now Moses had gone up and down a few times, and on one of his last trips, what most people overlook is that Joshua went with him.  What is even cooler is that they chilled up there for forty days and nights!! (Exodus 24: 13-18)

Joshua was pretty much Moses’ third arm.  So let us read of another time [Read Exodus 33: 7-11) He followed Moses EVERYWHERE!

Back in the day, Moses was special because he had an intimate relationship with God.  The people of his time recognized it and honoured it.  Joshua envied it… he craved it… he sought it.  The only difference between us and them is that we don’t have to be “chosen” to have that special relationship.  We can all have it through Jesus Christ.

What is the same though, is that we need to seek God; always.

We need to put Him first.  We need to spend time with God.  That is one reason that we have our devotions be it this one, or in a book, or in the side bar of our Bible, or listening to some preacher on the web.  We do this to draw closer to God.  We do this so we can hear His voice.  We do this so we can fulfill His will for us in our lives.

I mentioned last time about Joshua being a leader appointed by God, and how we were like Joshua–leaders.  We talked about how God believed that Joshua was capable of leading.  And it’s all true.  But here is an interesting fact that we can pick out from the scripture that we read:

See Joshua didn’t become a leader, and then seek God.
Joshua sought God, and then God used Him.

Now maybe you haven’t been like Joshua and sought the Lord first.  Although that is the best method, it’s not the only one.  God loves us, and wants to change us to reflect His glory, and He wants to use us.  God sees and knows the heart, and as long as we continue to try and seek His face, we are moving in the right direction.

So let’s do our best to become hungry for God.  Let us seek God.  Let’s stay in the tent just a bit longer……….  Let’s do it right now.

Legitimize the Words Themself, Himselves and Herselves

Did you know that the word themself is not a legitimate word?

This is a very sad reality.  There is a small loophole, a small exception like a Ford that works; where this word can exist.  There is a very rare case where this word is needed.

The exception is if there was a person that had a multiple personality.  His name was Tommy and he had a friend that no one else could see that he always talked to, named Timmy.  So for an example I am having a conversation with you about Tommy and I am explaining his situation: “Tommy seems to be talking to himselves a lot.”  To say that he was simply talking to himself is not correct for this statement does not describe that the situation that Tommy multiple personality disorder.  This may imply that Tommy was simply talking to himself like any person might do.

There are real people, just like Tommy that need this word to be legitimized. I would get that powerful super-writer Mark Twain to help but someone said he is dead. How inconvenient and inconsiderate of him.

Human

Humans are always trying to figure out
What the meaning of this life is all about.
If they were meant to know,
Wouldn’t it be revealed to them so?

Or maybe the answer is out there,
But they’re all too busy fixing up their hair.
They’ve forgotten the right way to live
They’ll do the worst they can, not knowing if He’ll forgive.

Their belief is going, fading.
Into the depths of Dark they are quickly wading.
The Word of God is only a legend now.
Other humans are to whom they will bow.

To these humans, there is no such thing as God.
They don’t care who created the dust on which they trod.
Whether they know it or not, the world is in its final days.
It will be destroyed in, now unknown, ways.

Jesus will come down to retrieve his children,
But only those who, to God, are kindred.
All those who are, of God, unemployed,
They, completely, will be destroyed.

No one knows about the revelations.
They cannot tell how bad are these conditions.
They live in their own filth, not caring about a thing.
From the wrath of God they will feel the sting.
They will never feel the thrill of riding on His wing.

There seems no way this people will ever be saved.
No matter how good they were,
If they didn’t believe,
Their stubborn unfaithfulness will lead to their graves.
