Issue I

From the Editor’s Desk
Welcome and welcome back. As many of our regular readers will notice (and I know there are a few of you out there) I am not Rachel Neumiester. I am Jordan Vetro (as you have most likely noted as the students council has bombarded you with numerous introductions to its members and their positions) and it is much a pleasure to welcome myself to this article as it is to welcome all of you to our next year at EBC. Let me introduce you all to the Voice of Emmanuel Bible College. A small but enjoyable project, placed upon Internet domain for convenience and cost efficiency, always here, day and night, at this location for your enjoyment and information. Here you shall become acquainted with news you missed, see the effects of the efforts of our committee to bring you an enjoyable and quality product and hopefully (for this part relies upon you, dear reader) hear the opinions and witness the good work of yourself and fellow students shared with the public.
This is a Voice of creativity, of ideas and diversity. It is the pulse of what is happening on campus and tied to everyone on campus. This is why it is vital that you and the rest of the campus read and contribute. I wish each and every one of you a year of education and growth. I hope you encounter new ideas and dilemmas which, in knowing and conquering, you grow, mentally personally and spiritually. Enjoy your year
Jordan Vetro

P.S. Check out our new page at the bottom of the page list. If people contribute, it promises to be very intriguing.

In the Headlines

- Our Provincial Election is in less than a month and is fast approaching. Important issues of the election include Conservative John Torey’s promise to give Private Religious Education government funding if they conform to Ontario curriculum and teach evolution as a creation option, with creationism left for religious classes. Also, the Liberals have promised the creation of a new holiday in February called Family Day, which has been called a method of distraction from broken promises.
There will also be a vote on a referendum to change our current voting system

- Brian Mulroney has written his memoirs Anyone daring with a great deal of free time is welcome to read them (as long as you don’t like Trudeau)

- The Kyoto bill is moving down the drain as foreign ministers now agree with Steven Harper’s assertion that it is over costly and unreasonable. Harper has promised a plan to reduce pollution by 6% in 2012

Personal Revival

NOTE: This article, though written beforehand, is very similar to the sermon delivered at chapel on Thursday. A fine testament to the one mindedness of our council. But one can never have too much of a good thing anyways.

Our theme for this year is REVIVE. Our campus has seen miraculous growth and change and this year is really dedicated to change and growth. We see our new educational center, the growth of our teaching staff, as well as the growth of this publication itself.
When considering revival, which we feel and see all around us, and which should be one of our greatest hopes, there are important questions we need to ask. Many of you might have asked and also answered these questions before, but it is important that we discuss them together. First “what is revival?” Revival, by the dictionary’s definition is a renewal. We are asking for renewal. Renewal of what? Of God’s spirit, of holiness, of contagious Christianity. Thats really cool. Unfortunately, we rarely go beyond what’s cool about it. We don’t step back after the excitement of wanting revival and ask “how does revival happen.”
When the student leadership team was invited to spend some time with our President, Doctor D, at his home, we sat down and discussed what revival meant, and what some of our goals were. Doctor D said to us that one of the best ways to ask for try to start a revival was to stand alone, draw a circle around yourself and pray for revival there. We talk a great deal about it, but we often have trouble realizing how centralized and personal revival is. Jesus said to pray in secret, so only God can know how spiritual you are. If revival is founded on prayer, and prayer is very personal, we can make revival personal. And when there is a revival within each of us, that revival will grow when we are together.

* * * * *
MT 6:6 “But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

We must also ask ourselves what stands in the way of revival. And in this also, look into yourself. What do you value above seeing the spirit move. This isn’t always a question of physical possession. Sometimes its our ideas, our thoughts, which take precedence over the moving of the spirit. In a Bible college student, sometimes it can be the need to have Biblical knowledge, or be the most moving worship leader, all excellent things, which can become more important that humbly growing as a Christian and seeing revival in ourselves. And here we see humility as a key part of revival.

* * * * *
PS 69:32 The humble have seen it and are glad; You who seek God, let your heart revive.
PS 69:33 For the LORD hears the needy And does not despise His who are prisoners.
* * * * *

We must have a deep willingness to learn. I have heard, even from the students of this school complaints that our teachers assignments and lessons are getting in the way of our spiritual growth. Here again, we must apply humility. If you have come to this school, you have shown your intent to know God better, not only spiritually, but intellectually. Spirituality can be both emotional and intellectual, and it is important that we understand the compromise between to two. Revival does not just happen in moments of intense musical worship or deep prayer, but in our studies and longing to learn more about God. Never sell short the importance of knowing God.

* * * * *
PS 119:25 My soul cleaves to the dust; Revive me according to Your word.
PS 119:26 I have told of my ways, and You have answered me; Teach me Your statutes.
PS 119:27 Make me understand the way of Your precepts, So I will meditate on Your wonders.
* * * * *
And again, humility is important. We must submit. We must understand the brokenness of ourselves and truly yearn to learn, from our professors, who want to help us understand God better.
Many of us are hoping to one day lead others. All of us hopefully are at EBC to learn how to positively affect those around us for Christ. If we hope to revive the spirits of others, and bring revival in our community, we must bring it about in ourselves, through prayer, love, humility and willingnesses to know God, I hope that each of us this year, can see God’s spirit move in us, and then, pour out of us. So that we can see our years theme, REVIVE, justified
