Curling Bonspiel

by: Brittany Rice

This last Saturday was my first introduction to the very interesting sport of curling. I originally signed up because it was a fundraiser for our athletics program, and because I wanted to be able to say that in my life I have curled. Of course I had no idea what I was in for. After a quick intro to the game by Tim Grace, I was left highly confused by his words such as “Curl the rock into the skip’s armpit”. When we started the game I realized that it takes a great amount of skill, often my curl was “too heavy” or “too soft”. When it was my time to sweep, I was encouraged to work harder by “hurry hard! Hurry hard!” I had no idea the kind of adrenaline this sport could give you. I found my self running along side this gliding rock and sweeping as hard as I could. I think it’s safe to say it was a fun night had by all. There were many “on the button” curls, many falls (I personally experienced numerous), many laughs, some pulled muscles, some split pants, and great team work. It was a time of bonding like I have never experienced. A couple days later now as I still experience strange pains and see the lovely bruises on my knees I still think fondly of the time, which says a lot for the sport. If there is another chance to curl I will gladly take it, and I encourage each of you to do so.

Helping Habitat for Humanity

by: Stefanie Parsons

The white paint was flowing and hearts were glowing as students from Emmanuel volunteered their time to work at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Waterloo on Thursday, October 19.

Amanda Gray, MTF leader, headed up the team of five students who painted doors and trim that will be installed in the five houses that are being built on Cherry Street in Kitchener. These houses will greatly improve the quality of life for five low-income families who will get to move in before the snow flies.

“It went well but it wasn’t as exciting as it would have been if we were actually on site,” said Amanda. “But seeing the pictures of the families helped me to understand the impact of what we were doing.”

The Habitat for Humanity ReStores collect new and used building materials, furniture, appliances and various household items that are donated by manufactures and suppliers as well as members of the community. These donations are then put on sale at the ReStores for customers who come looking for deals on renovation and household supplies. All income from the stores supports the many Habitat home building projects in Waterloo Region.

MTF is organizing another trip next year to help Habitat for Humanity, so be sure to get ready to build and paint come Fall 2007!

Lessons from Harold Albrecht, Conservative MP

by: Rachel Neumeister

It often amazes me how Christian men and women are willing to step up into positions of vulnerability and war zones of the faith. One remarkable man who has become a Christian leader in a post-modern world is Mr. Harold Albrecht. During reading week, I had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Albrecht who is the Conservative MP for the Kitchener-Conestoga riding. Before running for office last January, Albrecht practiced dentistry for 27 years and then founded a church in Kitchener called Pathway Community church where he pastored for six years.

Albrecht demonstrates a godly Christian leader in a culture where noble leaders is hard come by, let alone God-fearing ones. First and foremost, he recognizes that God is the ultimate leader and puts his faith in Him first. “I hope my faith affects every single aspect of my life,” says Albrecht. “My integrity has to extend beyond Sunday mornings.” Throughout all of his careers, he has been aware of his responsibility before God. “It’s freeing,” he says. “My identity is not wrapped up in being an MP. I can receive nasty letters, emails and phone calls, but at the end of the day I am a child of God. And that is where I get my value, not in being an MP.”

In Dr. Roy’s Introduction to Leadership class, we have been learning about what it means to be a servant leader. Albrecht explained the metaphor of “the example of servant leadership as Christ modeled”. We ought to be willing to do “the menial tasks as well as the bigger”. Albrecht displays servant leadership within his riding as he spends time among his constituents and attempts to recognize their needs and serve them directly. His motivation is not to win recognition or honor for himself, but to help and reach those he serves.

Bringing change for good in a culture that is heading the wrong way, or rising up as a powerful witness for Christ in a post-modernistic culture is not beyond any of us. Albrecht struggles with similar issues as the rest of us. He said that between his meetings, speeches and traveling, “personal time with God is a huge challenge, bigger than I was anticipating”. It doesn’t get easier as life goes on; Albrecht must consciously discipline himself to spend time in the Word too.
Amidst the shifting sands of morals, and the raging storms of values and standards, being able to firmly remain rooted in one’s beliefs becomes increasingly more difficult. Mr. Albrecht’s primary concern for the riding, and eventually for the country, is to rebuild a strong family foundation. He firmly believes that “a strong Canada is built upon strong families”. In his all his pursuits within the House of Commons, he says he will “work against anything that destroys [the strong family] foundation”. Issues which are negatively impacting the strong family, and therefore need to be addressed, include: same sex marriage, abortion, high divorce rates, and unfair taxation for families where one parent chooses to remain at home in order to raise children.

Albrecht puts a face on the reality that we can make a difference for Christ and he models an example of an effective Christian leader.

The Recent EBC Gossip

Reading Week Edition
by: Mike Salvatore

EBC graciously awards students a reading week so that they can catch up on assignments, textbook reading, and study for exams.

…a little birdie told me…

Many students did not use their reading week for reading.

After having a fallout with all of his lady friends on Upper Warder Left, Jamie “Charlie” Knight went on a few rebound dates….with Upper Warder Right. This man is a predator. Lower Lehman, watch out.

Trevor Creech set up an online business. He found some supporters and walked away with $50 000 000.00 in investment capital. His investors are trying to kill him, but they won’t find Trevor at EBC, it’s too secluded from the outside world!
Trevor spent all of his dirty money on dry cleaning for his favorite pair of socks…over and over again.

Angela Meinzinger stayed at EBC during the reading week, but she didn’t stay in her room. She stayed in yours. Who do I mean my “yours”? I mean she made sure she took a nap in every residence room from Saturday the 21st of October until Wednesday the 25th. For the rest of the week she took the bus around the tri-cities visiting commuter’s homes sleeping in their beds while they were out. I also heard that she drools in her sleep and she occasionally wets the bed, so everyone: WASH YOUR SHEETS. Fluids have had more than enough time to dry over the break.

Simon Boucher spent most of his reading week walking around the streets of downtown Detroit, MI looking for a gang to join. He found lots of gangs, but nobody wanted Simon in their gang. He came home slightly crestfallen on Saturday, October 28th.

PJ Wong and Ben Boogerman met up on the first Saturday of reading week for a wedding. PJ and Ben have been suffering the pains of paying for tuition, residence and meal plan, so they needed a good scam. PJ got ordained online some time ago through a website based in Vermont, so he performed a marriage for Ben and an old woman named Agatha somewhere in New Hampshire. Ben and Agatha were happily married until Friday, October 27th, when Ben left with all of her hard earned savings in a bag with a dollar sign on it. Ben and PJ successfully made it across the border and back to EBC on Saturday, October 28th. The American police caught up with Ben on Sunday, and he had to give all the money back.

WORDS

by: Julie-Anne Wideman

Words. Running around my mind
Bouncing around so much I can’t make sense of them
Some connect and make thoughts
Some collide and destroy the thoughts

Can’t focus. Where am I supposed to be?
Here or there?
Everywhere it seems

Someone is pulling in this direction
Commitments drag me in the other way
Where do I go?
Can’t I stay here?

Words going everywhere
Some random, some not
DESERT, FAILURE
CONFUSION, SKY

Where are they?
Where are those words I need?
. . . ..
Wait! I see them.
But they’re out of my reach

Then He hands them to me and all makes sense
PEACE, COMFORT, GUIDANCE

Lone Ranger

Dear Queen B:
Whatever happened to the lone ranger?
x_drewfan_7000_x

Dear x_drewfan_7000_x
I’ll let you in on a secret. You see, the Lone Ranger is not just any
average Joe. Some have related him to a superhero because he comes to the rescue of all those lost fellows out there. When they cry for help in desperation of not understanding a woman, he flies onto the scene with his vast knowledge of women and shares it. You see the Lone Ranger is not actually alone nor a ranger; it’s a cover up. Actually, he’s quite taken by a secret woman whose identity also must be protected. So if you long to hear again from the Lone Ranger, send out a cry of confusion over a woman, and he will answer. Oh yes, he will answer.
Yours truly,
Queen B

Knowing God More

by: Stephen Weber

Many Christians know, or know of Matthew 16:18 “And I say also unto thee that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”. In the NIV it says ‘overcome’ instead of ‘prevail’, but a footnote makes it clear that the meaning is the same — hell cannot stand against the church. This does not mean that we can sit comfortably at our school and in our churches and Satan cannot invade. This means that when we begin to invade Satan’s territory, or to assault the very gates of hell, we shall prevail. God’s power in us puts us so far above the Evil One and his minions that together we can, and should, assault his very domain.
So how does this relate to the title of knowing God more? How can we invade enemy territory unless we understand the ways of God? In our own strength we cannot even resist temptation. It is through God’s strength that we must overcome. “For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened” (Luke 11:10). If we seek a true and deeper knowledge of God, and we ask for His power, He enables us as the body of Christ to take on the impossible task.
Are we on fire for God in our community? How about as a community? The body of Christ is meant to work together for a reason. It is our common will to know God and our common prayers that unite us and bring about real change. It’s a will to know God not just on an academic level, but on a relational level and a community level. Going deeper in our relationship with God brings us closer to each other and united we not only stand against the world, but ready to invade.

What are you doing to ‘go deeper’ for God? I know I need to do more.

Iron and Steel

by: Wesley Hague

Iron on Iron, and steel to steel.
Each day I go, this fight seems real.
To wake, to live, to yearn, to thrive
I stand to question whether I’m alive
Who am I? or what could I be?
Is there more of me than I cannot see?

A chance, a flaw, I’ve missed the mark.
At times, things around feel so dark.
To return, to stand, to grown, to learn
A chance again, all I want to earn
On feet I stand, once again I shall try
until on my backside, again I lie.

Today is good, that path seems brighter
The load I carry, today seems lighter.
To laugh, to sing, to dance, to cheer
Times like this, I wait many a year.
Between the awful dark and the bright light
I walk daily as I fight this good fight.

Iron on Iron and steel to steel
Each day I go, this fight seems real.
