The Voice: Mission Statement
To provide a common medium by which the Emmanuel Bible College community can come together in their diversity to be encouraged, entertained and informed, as well as to express their unique talents and concerns.

A Note from the Editor:
October is upon us and assignments, papers and midterms are upon us. Seasons change, stress levels rise, people come and go, but God remains the same.

As riding the city bus is become a more frequent occurance for me, I am continually reminded of how blessed I am compared to so many people that I see. Eyes can tell a lot about a person and many people’s eyes who ride the bus emanate sadness, even emptiness. An old, fragile lady can barely walk on and off the bus, even with the help of her walker. A young child in a stroller sits with his parents who are arguing loudly. An adolescent is earnestly searching for her place in this world and seeking love in the wrong places. A haggard-looking man barely has enough threads across his shoulders to keep himself warm in the chilly fall air.
I am not empty, I am full. Overflowing.
I can stand and walk freely and unassisted.
I do not need to look for love.
I have a warm coat and sweater, several in fact.
And more than all of this, I have assurance of salvation in my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And because of this, I have a reason to get up each morning. I have a reason to wait patiently for the bus to accomplish menial errands. I have a reason to feel compassion for these people.

Missions Dinner

by: Katelyn UngerOn October 11, a group of us went over to Janice Anderson’s apartment for a mission’s dinner and social. Everyone brought a little something for supper, which included two great lasagnas, soup, nachos, some Philippine specialties, perogies and much more. The deserts were also superb.
Two gentlemen from Cross Training Canada spoke to us about a program that has started up in Toronto and Calgary. A student has to have a few years of Bible school training under his or her belt. They will move to Toronto or Calgary, spend time in a church of their choice (with help from the staff of the program). The church should be linked to the country that the student will be going to the following semester. The first semester will also include training and ministry. During the second semester, the student will be allowed to choose a country that he or she feels the call to go to. There, they will be apart of a ministry and much more. You can get up to thirty credits from this one year program, and a whole bunch of memories. If you have any questions about this, you can talk to Janice Anderson, myself (though my knowledge is limited in this department) or others that attended the missions dinner.
Once business had been taken care of, we had the privilege to watch Brandon Meyers’ mom, Marilyn being interviewed by 100 Huntley Street. What a great family!
It was a relaxing evening of stories and laughter; memories were shared and made. Thanks to Janice and everyone who made the food. God bless you all.

Editing Services

by: Rachel Neumeister

New this year at EBC:

As of October 2006, there is now an editing service available for any and all students who wish to have a second head and second pair of eyes edit and revise their paper courtesy of Brittany Rice and fellow volunteer editors. Your fellow students have volunteered their time to work with you on your papers. Twenty minute time slots are available every day (except Sunday) by various students from the school. You may sign up for a time slot, or come into the FC Peters room in the library during one of the posted times. Times and editors are available as follows:

Monday:
10:00 am -11:00 am –Angel Taylor
1:00 pm -3:00 pm –Beth Payson
Tuesday
10:00 am -11:00 am –Angel Taylor
1:00 pm -2:20 pm –Rachel Neumeister
Wednesday

At the request of the editors, please have already edited your paper yourself before bringing it. This will allow for more time to be spent on revision and rewording as opposed to grammar and spelling. If your paper is longer, please allow more than twenty minutes.

Bring on the good grades EBC students!

In the News… A Taxi in the Lake!

by: Jordan Vetro

It was a crisp cold morning. Rain poured down upon the EBC campus as a few quiet bodies hurried themselves across the soaked campus for brunch. As students began to congregate about the tables in the Campus Center, someone noticed a great catastrophe down towards the area of the basketball court. An unknowing taxi driver had driven into the infamous EBC lake, believing, by the reflection of the water and the parking lot, that he was still on paved ground. His bumpers had stuck on the shores of the lake and the tires of the automobile, no longer touching solid ground, spun to no avail. Immediately our students, eager to aid the distressed car leapt into action. Out in the cold and the rain, almost a dozen students were standing knee deep in water, heroically working to free the automobile. They pulled, and they pushed, the struggled and strained, with great heroism and determination they worked to save the victim. But the burden was too great. A tow truck had to be called. The behemoth vehicle arrived and prepared to tow the car. But wait, another dilemma. The tow truck driver would have to attach the tow cable himself, and because of the water he would have to endure, the price to the driver would be great. But again, an EBC student rose to the occasion. The noble Jason Edgar, wisely trained in the ways of cables, knelt in the mud and reached beneath the oiled underbelly of the car to hook up the cable himself. The tow truck slowly but surely, pulled the car to safety. Thank you Mr. Tow truck man. It was cause for celebration! During the afternoon many EBC students came to the lake for great fun and revelry. A proud moment for any EBC student!

The Recent EBC Gossip

by: Mike Salvatore…a little birdie told me…

Jamie “Charlie” Knight is dating upper warder left. That’s right, all of them. He’s even dating the ones who are currently in relationships. He’s a sly one, that Charlie…

Rachel Neumeister has peed in 6 different showers around EBC. Her goal is to do it in all of them before she graduates. [Editor’s Note: Be careful when asking to be gossiped about. You might get what you ask for.]

I heard that if you don’t staple or paperclip your papers for first year classes, you get an “A” because the profs take pity upon you. Try it!

Matt Cardases can’t fall asleep without his special parsnip. What makes this parsnip special? You’ll have to ask him.

Construction of the Tim Grace Place has already begun…underground. The architect decided that the EBC faculty’s subterranean super-fortress would be the best place to begin constructing the new building. Didn’t see a fortress in the building plans? I didn’t either. We’re not supposed to know.

Ben Ahrens has so many bumper stickers on his car because he’s trying to cover up the evidence from the time he backed into a herd of calves and piglets. He never forgave himself, so he pays his penance by pretending to be a vegetarian.

One Cent Candy

by: Rachel Neumeister

Hi there Sonny, what can I get you today?
I’m sorry, but I don’t have those anymore.
Because I did not like counting them for children who wanted a hundred of them for a loonie. It was too much work.
There are other candies here too, you know. There are lemon swirls or chocolate nuts or sour sticks or cherry delights or strawberry chewies or my favourite – butterscotch bursts.
I’m sorry ma’am; we got rid of them last month. I don’t have any for your son.
I almost regret it though. The young’ns always come in here, wanting those things and paying for them with a coin they found on the street. The disappointment on their faces makes an old man like me feel sorry for them kids. I hate saying no.
What a grand idea! I will include them with tonight’s order to the factory.
Come back on Saturday, kid. We’ll have ‘em back again then.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge cloud of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. Mission Magazine in the Library

by: Stefanie Parsons

Check out these articles in the mission magazines on the shelves beside the computer room:

In Mission Fields (Fall 2006) you can read about Canadian Olympian, Cindy Klassen who visited MCC projects in Nigeria and Ethiopia and talked with AIDS patients undergoing antiretroviral therapy.

The Evangelical Mission Alliance’s Team Horizons magazine (2006-2007) has many great articles with big, glossy pictures notably, The Face of Islam which outlines the ways that the Western media is unbalanced when portraying Muslims. And Megan Darreth writes about the decline of traditional churches in Europe in the article, Board Up the Cathedrals.

Last year’s issue of Internationals on Campus is focused on Asian students studying in American universities and introduces a plan to help them explore the Bible with other international students who are Christians. There are also many insightful student testimonies about how they came to a relationship with Christ through friendships with believers at university.

If you have a story about missions or know someone who does, contact the Voice at voiceofebc@gmail.com!

Abbreviation

Dear Queen B:
Why does the word abbreviation have so many letters?

Humorously Confused

Dear Humorously Confused:
If I could give you a virtual gold sticker for your excellent observation I
would. My answer for you is simple, politics. There are politics in
every aspect of life and always have been. So even in the early days of
English writing when someone decided to create the word abbreviation, there
were politics present. There was probably a council of highly intellectual
men who sat down to decide on the word that would eventually mean condensed
words. And in doing so they could not decide on a smaller word, because the
meaning already has to do with smaller, they wanted to prove that they’re
intellect and power was not small and therefore created a big word to mean
small. You see my friend: it’s all politics.

Yours Truly,
Queen B
